Office Furniture Installation Glossary

Assemble Furniture - The process of building furniture from seperate components by a professional office furniture installer.

CAD Drawing - Computer-Aided Design (CAD) or computer-aided design and drafting (CADD) is the production of drawings, specifications, and other design-related elements using special graphics and computer programs. May be used for creating floor plans and furniture systems layouts.

Case Goods - (Case Furniture) Pre-assembled units which are joined together on-site with metal plates and/or fasteners by an office furniture installer.

Credenza - A long side cabinet used for storage, often used to support a hutch.

Cubicle - Small self-contained workspace separated by wall panels. Cubicles can provide audio, visual, informational and territorial privacy to occupants.

Disassembly - Dismantling of existing systems furniture, modular workstations, wall paneling and cubicles into its components. See Also: Teardown.

Ergonomic - Describes how systems furniture should adapt to human requirements for comfort and productivity.

External Move - Office relocation that usually involves trucking services between different buildings.

Furniture Installation - Planning, coordinating and building of all types of furniture including home and office furniture systems by trained furniture installers. See Also: Office Furniture Installation.

Furniture Installation Quote - Usually a free work estimate given after an furniture installer's Walk Through. This work estimate can be binding or non-binding. A binding estimate is an agreement made in advance with the furniture installer that guarantees the total cost of the exact office furniture services written on the estimate. A non-binding estimate is the office furniture installer's approximation of the cost based on the estimated work requested.

Furniture Installers - Furniture expert who is uniformed and has been certified and/or trained to install, assemble, disassemble, reconfigure, relocate or repair all types of furniture. See Also: Office Furniture Installer.

Furniture Reconfiguration - Dismantling existing office furniture into its parts and reassembling the components into new arrangements for changing personnel needs.

Furniture Systems - Broad term encompassing modular workstations including panels (walls, partitions or dividers), worksurfaces and storage. It is flexible in its set up and can be easily installed, reconfigured and/or relocated. See also: Office Furniture Systems

Glides - Small adjustable feet found at the bottom of panels, desks and workstations used for leveling.

Hutch - Raised cabinet (enclosed or open) with shelves resting on a solid base such as a desk or credenza.

Internal Move - Relocation within an office or within a building.

Knocked Down - (KD) Flat-packed office furniture requiring full assembly by an office furniture installer.

Modular Office Furniture - Office furniture units that can be rearranged or combined in different configurations.

Modular Workstation - Individual self-contained work space which may be connected by wall panels or freestanding panels.

Office Furniture Installation - Planning, coordinating and building of office furniture systems, including cubicles, modular office furniture, work stations and/or case goods by trained office furniture installers. See Also: Furniture Installation.

Office Furniture Installer - Systems furniture expert who is uniformed and has been certified and/or trained to install, assemble, disassemble, reconfigure, relocate or repair office furniture. See Also: Furniture Installers.

Office Furniture Reconfiguration - Disassembling and reassembling, modifying, systems office furniture for accommodating changing personnel, space and technology needs.

Office Furniture Services - Usually offered by full-service installation companies which may include office furniture consultation, installation, disassembly, reconfiguration, repair, maintenance, refurbishing and relocation.

Office Furniture Systems - Broad term that encompasses modular workstations which include panels (walls, partitions or dividers), worksurfaces and storage. This furniture type is flexible in it's setup and can be easily installed, reconfigured and/or relocated. See Also: Systems Office Furniture

Office Panel Systems - Provide the support for the worksurface, house electrical and data cables and enhance the aesthetics of the work space environment. Office panels also provide visual, acoustical and informational privacy. See also: Wall Panel Systems.

Panel Cart - Specialized piece of moving equipment used to transport disassembled work surfaces, modular workstation panels, conference tables and white boards.

Panel Cleaning - Process that maintains wall panels with specialized cleaning equipment.

Ready to Assemble Furniture - (RTA) Office furniture that is designed to be put together after it is purchased. Ikea for example sells this type of furniture.

Reconfiguration - (Furniture Reconfiguration) Dismantling existing office furniture into its parts and reassembling the components into new arrangements for changing personnel needs.

Relocation - An internal or external office move.

Restorations - Furniture that has been brought back to near original condition through reconstruction, refinishing or replacement of missing parts.

Stair Carry - Labor intensive commercial delivery, internal move or external move that involves carrying loads up or down stairs.

Systems Furniture - Broad term that encompasses modular work stations which include panels (walls, partitions or dividers), work surfaces and storage. Systems furniture is flexible in its setup and can be easily installed, reconfigured and/or relocated. See also: office furniture systems.

Teardown - Dismantling of existing systems furniture, modular workstations, wall paneling and cubicles into its parts. See Also: Disassembly.

Walk Through - When a project coordinator is invited on-site to gather detailed information on a clients furniture installation or relocation needs. This is usually done for submitting a bid or job estimation.

Wall Mounting - Attaching display boards etc. and securing bookcases and shelving to office walls to provide a functional and safe work place environment.

Wall Panel Systems - Provide the support for the work surface, house electrical and data cables and enhance the aesthetics of the work space environment. Office panels also provide visual, acoustical and informational privacy. See also: Office Panel Systems.

Workstation - A self-contained work area usually comprising of a worksurface, free-standing or attached modular wall panels and storage.
